Step 01
Signs
• Dryer will not start or run even when buttons are pressed
• Control panel displays 'E5' or 'E-5' error message
• Door appears to close but dryer does not respond to start command
• Error may appear intermittently or persist constantly
• Drum light may not turn on when door is opened
• Audible beeping sounds when attempting to start the cycle
Step 02
Possible Causes
• Worn or broken door latch mechanism that fails to engage properly
• Faulty door latch switch not sending closure signal to control board
• Misaligned dryer door preventing proper seating in latch assembly
• Broken or bent strike (catch) on the dryer frame
• Damaged door latch assembly components worn from normal use
• Loose wiring connections to door latch switch
• Control board malfunction unable to recognize door closure signal
• Foreign debris obstructing door closure or latch mechanism
Step 03
Safety Checks You Can Do
• Verify the circuit breaker for your dryer is in the ON position; if tripped, reset it and attempt to restart
• Inspect the entire door seal and frame for visible cracks, warping, or damage
• Ensure the lint filter is clean and properly inserted, then check rear lint vent for blockages or restriction
• Open and close the dryer door firmly several times to verify it latches with an audible click
• Wipe the door latch strike area clean of any lint, detergent residue, or debris that may prevent proper closure
• Confirm the dryer door is not warped by checking if it closes smoothly and evenly without resistance
• Review the control panel settings to ensure a drying cycle is selected before pressing start
• Allow the dryer to cool for 15-20 minutes, then attempt to restart the cycle
• Perform a hard reset by switching the circuit breaker OFF for 60 seconds, then switch back ON and retry operation
• Check both sides of the door gasket for accumulated lint or damage that could affect sealing
• If error persists after these checks, contact a certified GE service technician as internal component replacement may be required
